The annual rate of inflation as measured by the Retail Prices Index (RPI) increased to 4.5% in January from 3.3% in December.
The January annual rate of inflation excluding housing costs shown by the RPI was 5.5% in January compared with 4.4% in December.
The annual rate of inflation shown by the Consumer Prices Index (CPI) was 3.9% in January.
Prices over the month to mid-January increased by only 0.19%. The big jump in the RPI annual rate is therefore more of a reflection of the fact that the Index was actually falling this time last year (mainly on account of declining mortgage and energy costs) than of core inflationary pressure currently.
