Southern Area Plan
What's Happening?What’s happening?
The Department of Infrastructure (DoI) is taking steps in the preparation of the Area Plan for the South of the Island.
This follows on from the Publication, in 2007, of a Strategic Plan, containing broad policies covering the whole of the Island. Click here to find out more about the Strategic Plan.
The Area Plan for the South will include proposals which guide development at the local level and will cover Rushen, Arbory, Malew, Port St Mary, Port Erin and Castletown (see map - right).
Latest News
Following the recent Public Inquiry stage in the Area Plan process the Department has received the Inspector's Report.
The Implication of this report are now being considered and should modifications be required to the Plan these will be published in due course.
To obtain a copy of the Inspector's Report please click here
In order to fully understand the references in the Inspector's Report the following documents are required:
- The Department's proposed changes document. Submitted to the Inquiry in December 2011.
- The table showing analysis of responses published in April 2011.
Why do we need an Area Plan?
The Plan will aim to guide development to those areas where the Island and its people can gain most from it and where it has the least adverse impact.
What is the status of the current Local Plans in the South?
The current Local Plans and the 1982 Development Order in the South will remain in operation and are the Statutory Development Plans for the South until the new Plan has been approved. Some weight may however be afforded the Area Plan as it reaches the final stages in the process.
What stage are we at now?
The implications of the Inspector's report are currently being assessed. Following this the Department will determine if any changes (modifications) should be made to the Plan in the light of the Inspector's report. Should any modifications to the Plan be required these will be published in due course.
What happens next?
The Department will issue a response to the Inspector's Report and if required any modifications to the Plan. Should modifications to the Plan be proposed there will be a period given to submit representations.
