Theoretical Driving Tests

Before taking a practical driving test a learner driver must pass the Theory Test.

With ever increasing levels of traffic on the Island's roads it is important that learner drivers have a basic understanding of the "rules of the road" before they pass their practical driving test.

Listed below are a number of books and a CD-Rom which will help prospective learner drivers to prepare for the Theory Test. These books are available from most book shops on the Island.

Q Where can I take the combined theory and hazard perception test?
AThe Isle of Man College, Holmfield Road, Douglas, on Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings at 9.00 am; and Monday, Thursday and Friday afternoons at 4.00 pm. Booking information can be obtained on telephone number 648348.

Q Can I take the test before my 16th birthday?
AYou can only take the test once you hold a provisional driving licence.
Q How much does the test cost?
AThe test fee is £30, cheques should be made payable to "Isle of Man government".
Q What do I do when I have passed the test?
AYou must keep your pass certificate and take it with you when you sit your practical driving test as the examiner will need to see it. You must also quote the serial number of the certificate on the application form when booking a driving test.
Q Does the certificate run out?
AYes, the certificate lasts for two years, if you have not passed the practical test within this time you will need to re-take the theory/hazard test again. You cannot take your practical test if the certificate has expired.
