Whether you are a complete beginner or are experienced at paddling, the Isle of Man is a perfect place to try sea kayaking and can be as relaxing or demanding as you choose.
With over 100 miles of coastline there really is no better place to view the Island’s stunning cliff formations and rolling hills than from the water.
Enjoy an evening paddle and watch the sun set on the secluded bay of Niarbyl, in the west of the Island, or take part in a heart stopping adventure as you ride the tidal waves and overfalls around the Calf of Man, in the south, where you’re bound to spot some inquisitive seals.
If you have a strong sense of adventure why not try a kayaking expedition? You’ll paddle all day before stopping to light a campfire on a secluded beach and then settle down to sleep under the stars.
Whichever kayaking experience you choose you’ll visit secret places and marine caves which are only accessible by the small sea craft – if you’re lucky you’ll be joined on your journey by sea birds and marine animals including puffins, dolphins and basking sharks. Don’t forget your waterproof camera!
Adventurous Experiences, in St Johns, and The Venture Centre, in Maughold, both offer kayaking tuition. Choose from half-day or full-day sessions, evening paddles or an overnight expedition – all of which will be tailored to your ability and confidence on the water. Kayaking sessions run throughout the year and tie in with the weather and sea conditions so a degree of flexibility is required. All equipment is provided.
The Venture Centre offers one and a half hour sea kayaking sessions for £20 per person with expeditions starting at £110 per person. Adventurous Experiences offers sea kayaking sessions for £45 per person and overnight expeditions which start at £125 per person.
If you’re keen to take to the water but don’t want to go it alone try a tandem kayak. You’ll be joined by an experienced instructor from Adventurous Experiences who will paddle with you -meaning the session can be as relaxing or demanding as you choose. Prices start from £95.
And if you want to try sea kayaking at a more leisurely pace why not hire a kayak from 7th Wave and spend an afternoon in Port Erin Bay? Kayaks are available from April to October - simply turn up on the day to hire one.
