ACTAN by Maureen Cowbourne
The Association for Care Training and Assessment Networks posed itself the very searching question when it came to the Island last year. The network asked itself: 'Are we as good as we think?' That question is likely to provoke some defensive responses, so it was important it was asked in a harmonious setting and the organisation found just that when it came to the Island in November 2006.

Once a year the national UK organisation, that aims to promote and develop best practice in the use of occupational standards across health, care and education, holds an annual conference somewhere in Britain and the Island 'won hands down' said Maureen Cowbourne, domiciliary care manager with the DHSS who opened the conference.

Crimestoppers Conference by Phil O'Shea
Crimestoppers works quietly behind the scenes to combat violent crime and make all our lives safer, and it does so very effectively. The charity accepts anonymous tip offs from the public about criminal behaviour and every day, 17 people are arrested and charged every day as a result of information given to Crimestoppers and every five days, somebody is charged with murder or attempted murder following calls to Crimestoppers.

Since the charity was established in 1988, it has received almost 900,000 calls with useful information, leading to almost 78,5000 arrests and charges. Over £97m of property has been recovered and almost £135m worth of drugs.

Marine Biological Lab event by Neil Duggan
Nearly 400 people descended on Port Erin last summer to mark the closure of the Marine Biological Station after 114 years' research into marine science. The decision by Liverpool University to stop funding the laboratory was met with great regret by the scientific community, not least because it had conducted some world beating research.

Particular sadness was felt by former students and scientists who have spent memorable times at the laboratory, where they had formed an attachment to Port Erin, the Island and each other. Its closure could not go unmarked and a group associated with the laboratory decided to hold a weekend to celebrate '114 years of marine science.'

Conference Ambassador story by Harry Pease
They say all you need to be an ambassador the Isle of Man's Visitor and Conventions Bureau is a love for the island and desire to bring members of your association or institute here. These are two requirements that Castletown resident Harry Pease easily fulfills. In September 2005 he was instrumental in bringing 600 Rotarians from his own District 1280 to the island for their annual conference and a further 500 a fortnight later from the adjacent District 1050 for their conference.

Both events were viewed as a total success, so much so that District 1050 are likely to return in 2009 whilst District 1280 have already decided to return again in 2010.
