Millenium Way
![]() | ![]() The Millennium Way was the first long distance footpath in the Isle of Man, established to coincide with the Millennium Year of Tynwald, the Parliament of the Island, in 1979. The route of the footpath is based on the 'Regia Via', the Royal Way to Ramsey, as chronicled in the 14th century. The route starts from Castle Rushen in Castletown to approximately one mile from Ramsey town square on the main road to Kirk Michael at the foot of Sky Hill. The Millennium Way is approximately 28 miles long, clearly signposted and can be walked in a day by the experienced hiker. Fortunately, for the less experienced or serious walker, it can be split into three convenient legs and by using public transport, it is possible to start and finish at various points along the Way. The route features some outstanding scenery and passes through Ballasalla, Silverdale Glen, Crosby, and Baldwin where there are public transport facilities, phones and with the exception of Baldwin, public houses. From Baldwin the second half of the walk is over open terrain with no facilities, generally away from roads and therefore is for the committed and prepared walker. Ramsey offers many eating establishments and a bus or electric tram for homeward journeys. Similarly, Castletown at the other end of the Way offers a bus or steam train travel option. The Millennium Way can equally be enjoyed starting in Ramsey. A look at the prevailing wind should determine the most comfortable option. |
