A look back at last years Games...

On 12th May 2007 the National Sports Centre hosted the 6th Manx Youth Games involving over 1,100 children competing in 12 different sports. Teams from North Douglas/Onchan, South Douglas/ Braddan, West, South and North of the Island, competed in what was a hugely successful event. All the competitors wore a t-shirt with a specific team colour, depending on the region they were representing, kindly provided by HSBC Bank.

There was a carnival atmosphere in the NSC Athletics Stadium, as the Opening Ceremony got underway, with all the participants marching along the track, creating a sea of colour down the 100 metre straight.

Following an aerobic style warm up, in front of a packed grandstand, each of the sports dispersed to their venues to begin their respective competition. The Manx Youth Games concluded with each sport holding a presentation with all the competitors receiving a medal regardless of the position they finished and a water bottle and kit bag from the sponsors.

The 2007 Games actually started back in January when children were invited to attend weekly training sessions at venues in all regions of the Island. The response was remarkable with over 2000 children attending 50 different sessions, under the supervision of qualified coaches.

Although the day was a memorable occasion, it is essential that these children be given the necessary opportunities to remain in sport for many years to come. The event has identified new talent, and provides a starting point for them to become involved in sport. Working with each of the Governing Bodies, we will be looking to form new junior leagues or competitions.

A huge 'Thank You' must go to all the helpers and volunteers in each of the sports, without whom the event could not happen. Thanks must also go to the sponsors of the event:
