Background of Manx Sport and Development

KEY DATES

  • 1987 Tourist Board became Department of Tourism & Transport

  • 1991 Sports Development Manager appointed Manx Sports Development (MSD) formed September – NSC Phase 1 opened (Athletics Track, Synthetic Pitch & Raceway)

  • 1993 Sports Development Officer appointed

  • 1996 Director of Leisure appointed, Leisure Division formed and Department is renamed Department of Tourism & Leisure

  • 1998 January – NSC Phase 2a opened ( Swimming Pools, Café Bar). June – Kensington Road Sports Ground opens as a Junior Sports Development Centre in partnership with the IOM Sports Council. July – NSC Phase 2b opened (Main Sports Hall, Fitness Zone & Health Suite). September – National Sports Manager is appointed to be responsible for facilities and sports development (post of Sports Development Manager is deleted) Manx Sport & Recreation (MSR) takes on Island-wide role (Manx Sports Development brand is discontinued)

  • 1999 Second Sports Development Officer appointed. May – Regional Synthetic pitches completed and opened as dual use facilities in Castletown, Peel and Ramsey

  • 2001 NSC Phase 2c opened (Secondary Sports Hall, Squash Centre, Bowls Hall) March – NSC Officially opened by Trevor Brooking, Chairman of Sport England and the launch of the Manx Sporting Hall of Fame. July – Isle of Man hosts the IXth Island Games. NSC hosts the Opening Ceremony and is the main venue for the Games. December – NSC registered as Highly Commended for the UK Sport & Leisure Quality Award (QUEST).

  • 2002 May – 1st Manx Youth Games. December – Tynwald approve the Isle of Man Sport & Recreation Strategy 2002-2012

  • 2003 December – NSC is reassessed for the UK Sport & Leisure Quality Award (Quest) and maintains its Highly Commended status

  • 2004 October – The post of Sports Development Manager is reinstated. November – The first School Sports Co-ordinator is appointed

  • 2005 November – Disability Sports Development Officer appointed

  • 2006 January – NSC is reassessed for QUEST and maintains its Highly Commended Status (82%). March – Sports Development Unit is assessed for QUEST for the first time and receives registration (70%). September – Badminton/Hockey Development Officer appointed

  • 2007 May – Rugby Development Officer appointed
