ELDERLY MENTALLY INFIRM (EMI) SERVICES
There are 3 long stay areas and three day centres within Elderly Mentally Infirm (EMI) services.
These are located in Thie Meanagh, (Douglas) Reayrt Skyal (Ramsey) and Gansey Unit which is situated within Southlands Resource Centre.
These facilities offer long and short term care for older people who live with functional and/or organic illnesses
Conditions such as Schizophrenia, Bi-Polar affective disorder, are known as functional illnesses. Dementia which is often mistaken for a mental illness, is in fact a physical condition and is known as an “organic illness”. The term 'dementia' is used to describe the symptoms that occur when the brain is affected by specific diseases and conditions. Symptoms of dementia include loss of memory, confusion and problems with speech and understanding.
People can present with behaviours such as aggression, wandering, agitation and noisiness, to name but a few. When these behaviours become consistent and extreme and the individual cannot be managed in another area, such as residential or nursing homes, referral to our unit would most likely be appropriate.
EMI services also offer drop in facility for clients when Carers have special appointments e.g. Hospital appointments, under the “Good Neighbour Scheme” Adjacent to each long stay unit is a day centre. These can cater for up to 15 Clients per day.
Although the primary function of the day centres is to offer services for clients who live in the community, residents from the long stay units are welcome to attend depending on availability.
We will make every effort to meet the individual’s physical, emotional, psychological, social and spiritual needs regardless of sex, race, culture and religion.
