‘Our Sporting Life’ celebrates the achievements of the Isle of Man’s modern sports stars, whilst also revealing historic sporting heroes and events. The exhibition aims to salute all aspects of sport on and from the Isle of Man, from school sports through to world championship performances. It examines our attitudes towards sport, looking at what inspires our sporting stars, what motivates ordinary people to go to extraordinary lengths for their sport and what sport actually means to each of us. Elements of the exhibition will change over the course of the year to coincide with events in the sporting calendar. The exhibition will open with a focus upon the Commonwealth Games and the phenomenal success of Manx cyclists on the world stage.

Manx National Heritage aims to make the exhibition as community focused as possible, and once the exhibition opens curators are still keen to gather stories from those with a sporting story to share.

So whether you’re a budding athlete, a committed coach, a dedicated sports fan or have fond memories of schools sports day – MNH would like to hear from you. To submit your ‘sporting contribution’ Manx National Heritage have set up a survey or visit our Facebook discussion page.

 Dr Jennifer Platten

Presentations to the ecclesiastical courts involved the church in issuing punishments
to those found guilty of fornication as well as many other activities that went against
the perceived moral code. This course will look at the social history of the Manx
during a period when many activities that we would classify as acceptable today
were actively censured by the church. It will look at the means and motives behind
presentations and their punishments, what the information supplied can tell us
about life on the island in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and will look at
some of the more interesting and unusual cases brought before the church
authorities.

 About the Show

Kevin Bridges will be making his Villa Marina debut with a brand new show called the 'The Story Continues...' which follows up the huge success of his sell-out UK & Ireland tour of 2010. Having made his debut on BBC 1's 'Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow' in 2009 he has now gone onto host the Bafta nominated 'Live At The Apollo' and Channel 4's 'Stand-Up For The Week'. His new 6 part BBC 1 series - 'Kevin Bridges What's The Story' will be transmitted in February 2012 and a new DVD - 'Kevin Bridges The Story Continues...' will be recorded in Oct, 2012 at the Glasgow SECC Arena for November 2012 release.

Kevin appeared on "The World Stands Up" and "The Comedy Store" (Comedy Central) which led to his first big TV break as a guest on the first series of "Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow" on BBC ONE, which aired to over 5 million viewers. It led to Kevin being the fastest act to sell out all 28 nights of his 2009 Edinburgh Festival run and adding a staggering 15 extra shows, which also sold out! A favourite with the punters but also the critics, Kevin received 5 star reviews and a nomination for the prestigious Edinburgh Comedy Awards "Best Newcomer".

Kevin's astonishing rise to success continued in 2010 - he recorded his debut DVD at a sold out Glasgow SECC arena in front of 10,000 fans, became a regular on hit new comedy show "Stand Up For The Week" (Channel 4), headlined the first episode in the second series of "Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow" (BBC ONE) and also hosted an episode of the forthcoming sixth series of "Live At The Apollo" (BBC ONE).

"It's his eye for detail that has elevated him to a MUST-SEE act." The Daily Mirror

"The most exciting talent in Scottish stand-up." The Herald

 About the Show

A unique opportunity to spend an intimate evening with one of the world’s most renowned musicians! Julian will perform favourite classics, accompanied by Pam Chowhan on piano, including Bach, Faure, Saint Saens and Debussy as well as by his father William and brother Andrew. Julian will also reminisce on his many collaborations with musicians as diverse as Yehudi Menuhin, Joaquin Rodrigo, jazz greats Cleo Laine and Stephane Grappelli as well as Elton John and, of course, his brother Andrew. With pianist Pam Chowhan. A must for all music lovers!

Widely regarded as one of the most creative musicians of his generation, Julian Lloyd Webber has collaborated with an extraordinary array of musicians from Yehudi Menuhin, Lorin Maazel, Neville Marriner and Georg Solti to Stephane Grappelli, Elton John and Cleo Laine.

Julian has made many outstanding recordings including his Brit-Award winning Elgar Concerto conducted by Yehudi Menuhin (chosen as the finest ever version by BBC Music Magazine) the Dvorák Concerto with Vaclav Neumann and the Czech Philharmonic, Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations with the London Symphony under Maxim Shostakovich and a coupling of Britten's Cello Symphony and Walton's Concerto with Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, which was described by Gramophone magazine as "beyond any rival".

Julian has given more than fifty works their premiere recordings and has inspired new compositions for cello from composers as diverse as Malcolm Arnold and Joaquin Rodrigo to James MacMillan and Philip Glass.

Julian’s most recent recording, Phantasia, is based on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera and features violinist, Sarah Chang. This is available on EMI and is the first of several planned recordings that Julian will be making for EMI Classics. His EMI disc, Unexpected Songs, was released during 2006. Julian Lloyd Webber recently celebrated his 60th birthday in 2011 with music, visuals and talk, in “Travels With My Cello”.

Julian is a passionate supporter of Leyton Orient Football Club and was the first official busker on London’s Underground.
