The Employment Services Division is at the centre of all activities undertaken by The Personnel Office. It acts as a central support to all Government Departments and their staff and provides a comprehensive, effective and timely recruitment function for the Civil Service Commission.

The Division is made up of two sections which together provide support to the whole of The Personnel Office while at the same time specialising in specific areas of Personnel/ HR work:

The Personnel Office Recruitment Team

The Personnel Office provides recruitment administration for Civil Service posts in the following areas of Government:

  • Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry
  • Attorney General’s Chambers
  • Chief Secretary’s Office
  • General Registry
  • Department of Local Government and the Environment
  • Manx National Heritage
  • Office of Fair Trading
  • Department of Tourism and Leisure
  • Department of Trade and Industry

The Personnel Office Recruitment Team hold details of the Civil Service posts being advertised by these Departments and will be able to supply you with application forms, job descriptions, person specifications, together with information on terms and conditions and closing dates etc. Alternatively you can download these from www.gov.im/jobs .The Recruitment Team can also provide general information on working in the Civil Service and how to apply.

How to get further Information about a vacant post

If you require more information about a post than is contained in the Job Description etc then you will need to contact the recruiting manager. A name and contact number for the recruiting manager is usually given in the recruitment documents and can be obtained from the Recruitment Team if you do not have these.

Other Recruitment Sections:

Civil Service and Non-Civil Service Posts Recruitment administration for non Civil Service posts, for example, manual workers, teachers, medical staff, is undertaken by the departments that the post-holder will work for. Their local recruitment team will hold all the details on these jobs and the contact details for the appropriate recruitment team will usually be given in the job advertisements. A number of the larger Departments have chosen to undertake recruitment administration for Civil Service posts as well.

These Departments are:

  • Department of Health and Social Security
  • Treasury
  • Department of Education
  • Isle of Man Water Authority
  • Department of Transport
  • Department of Home Affairs

For details of Civil Service posts in these areas of Government you will need to contact the Department’s own recruitment section, contact details for these will be given in the job advertisement or www.gov.im/jobs.

The Personnel Office does not hold details of posts being advertised by Departments that undertake their own Civil Service recruitment administration but we will be able to put you in contact with the appropriate section if you are having difficulty in contacting them.

Employee Relations Advisers (ERAs)

The ERAs provide advice and guidance to Public and Civil Service managers and staff with regard to all employee relations issues.

Advice is available by telephone or in person, however whenever possible appointments should be pre-arranged by contacting one of the Employee Relations Advisers on the numbers below.

We can provide information, advice and support in respect of the following

  • corporate people strategy, HR policies, procedures and practices
  • terms and conditions of employment/service
  • management of people and performance
  • grievance, discipline and capability handling and resolution
  • recruitment, current employment law and practice

The Employee Relations Team also delivers workshops, seminars and briefings on employee relations matters such as handling discipline and grievance and managing capability. Attendance on these workshops can be arranged via Learning and Organisational Development Division (LoDD) of The Personnel Office. If there is sufficient demand within a work area on-site delivery of the courses can be arranged.

Support and guidance is also provided to managers in the preparation of business cases relating to the Civil Service Establishment and other employment issues where approval of the Civil Service Commission is required. This may include advice on job design, grading and organisational structures in relation to Civil Service posts and other staff groups when appropriate.
