Renewing a Register Entry
A register entry is valid for a period of twelve months.
A renewal form together with a copy of the existing register entry will be automatically sent out approximately 6 weeks prior to the expiry date of the register entry.
This timescale provides a data controller with the opportunity to review the entry and, if necessary, make any changes.
The signed renewal form must be returned to the Office prior to the expiry date together with the fee.
The register entry will be renewed for the next 12 months starting from the expiry date, so it is irrelevant when the forms are returned - you will not lose out by completing the forms when you receive them rather than waiting until the last day.
A register entry expires if it is not renewed and if the data controller continues to process personal data after the entry has expired they will be committing a criminal offence.
If the register entry expires, the data controller will be required to apply for a new entry on the register of data controllers.
