How to Notify
If you are processing "personal data" you must inform the Supervisor of this processing. This is called "notification".
"Notification" is how an organisation ("data controller") provides the Supervisor with certain details that form the "register entry" for the data controller. The Supervisor maintains a public register of these data controllers and their register entries.
Registering your organisation as a data controller is only a small part of your obligations under the Data Protection Act - simply having a register entry does not mean that you have fulfilled your obligations under the Act.
Many, but not all, organisations are required to have an entry in the register of data controllers.
All organisations, whether they are, or are not required to have a register entry, must ensure that all the processing of personal data they undertake complies with the remaining parts of the Act, in particular the Eight Data Protection Principles.
