Isle of Man Bank Sports Awards 2013 - Winners announced

Friday, 11 April 2014

The 2013 Isle of Man Bank Sports Awards took place at the Villa Marina Thursday 10 April 2014 to celebrate another great year of sporting success for the Isle of Man.

Having missed out to Peter Kennaugh in 2012, superstar cyclist Mark Cavendish again took the honours in the prestigious Sportsman of the Year category. Mark had another great year in 2013 in which he won the Red jersey in the Giro D’Italia, and in doing so became only the fifth rider in history to complete the hat-trick of wins in the three Grand Tour events. He also chalked up another two stage wins in the Tour De France, taking his overall total up to 25 stages.

Meanwhile, young equestrian rider, 16 year old Yasmin Ingham of Greeba won the Sportswomen of the Year following her double gold medal winning performance in the European Pony Championship in Italy last summer.

Peter Kennaugh, a rising star with the high profile Team Sky, won the Ambassador Award whist World Youth Enduro champion Jamie McCanney was U21 Sportsman of the Year. British Junior Road Race champion, Anna Christian took the female U21 award.

Cycling picked up a fourth award with Mike Doyle being named Coach of the Year whilst the Isle of Man Team who topped the medals table at the NatWest Island Games was awarded Team of the Year.

Netball Association Chairman, Pip Cross, was presented with Administrator of the Year following her recognition by England Netball and 2011 Disability Award winner Zoe Lambie repeated her win following her achievements in local long distance walking events such as the End of End Walk.

Local badminton stalwarts, Frank & Pat Anderson of Onchan were honoured with a unique joint Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of decades of involvement with badminton as competitors, coaches and administrators as well as sterling work with Island Games and the Commonwealth Games Association of the Isle of Man.

Vice Chairman of Isle of Man Sport Gary Corkhill commented:

'It was arguably the hardest selections we have ever had to make. We had World Champions, European Champions and British Champions to choose from. The evening is a fantastic showcase for our sports stars, so many of whom are now competing at a World level. We say it every year but last year was another great year for Manx sport. Thanks are again due to our event sponsors Isle of Man Bank, for helping us to arrange this fabulous evening to celebrate sport.'

The evening also saw the presentation of Isle of Man Sport Aid scholarships for those up and coming athletes who will receive financial and Support Services support over the coming year.

Guest of Honour was Double Olympic Swimming Champion, Rebecca Adlington, OBE who earlier in the day spent time with some of the young up and coming stars of the future.
