The Stone CrossesThe integration of Viking and Celt in the Isle of Man is further confirmed by carved stone memorials bearing runic inscriptions which record both Scandinavian and native Gaelic names. Equally eloquent are the art and iconography of the crosses; images from pagan mythology give way to those of Christianity, and the art forms of the Scandinavians meld with those of the Celtic west to form a style unique to the Island. The outstanding collections of crosses are at the parish churches of: - Andreas
- Jurby
- Maughold
- Michael
- Lonan
- Braddan
and in the Manx Museum, Douglas. |
