Acknowledgements, references and copyright

In the majority of cases copies can be made of documents, plans, maps, photographs and printed sources held by the Manx National Heritage Library, and details of current reproduction charges may be obtained from the Library staff. Please note that all requests for copies must be made on the appropriate copyright declaration forms which are available in the Library Reading Room. Members of the public are not normally allowed to take photographs of any documents

1. Copyright

The Copyright Act of 1991 lays down the subsistence, ownership and duration of copyright. The Act protects intellectual property. It should never be assumed that the copyright residing in a document in the care of the Library is necessarily vested in Manx National Heritage. However, as a rule, single copies of documents are permitted for study and research purposes. Any breach of copyright in later use of the copies falls on the person for whom they were made. A copy of the Copyright Act is available at the Library.

2. Acknowledgment and Reference in Publications

The use of a copy document or documents from any of the Manx National Heritage Library collections in publications, theses and dissertations should be accompanied by the following acknowledgment:

‘Reproduced by kind permission of Manx National Heritage’.

Photographs should be accompanied by the following words:

‘Manx National Heritage’.

Written consent should always be obtained before publication and a complimentary copy of the work presented to the Library for public use.

The Manx National Heritage Library holds a wealth of various and extensive source material. Staff at the library and throughout Manx National Heritage, are always pleased to hear from anyone with an interest in Manx history.
