The Sound And The Calf Of ManTravel to the southwest of the Isle of Man...and you reach the Meayll peninsula. Lying beyond the bays of Port St Mary and Port Erin, this craggy upland has been home to people for thousands of years. Five thousand years ago the dead were buried in a chambered tomb on Meayll Hill and close to it lies a much more recent radar defence station from World War II. Nearby, the village of Cregneash remains as a testimony to Manx traditions of upland farming and was a final stronghold of the Manx Gaelic language. The fields and stone quarries in the area are evidence of activity over the many centuries which have resulted in a land rich in plants and creatures. The spectacular coast at the Chasms, or at Spanish Head and Black Head, shows the intricate banding of geological formations and provides nesting spaces for sea birds. Move on to the very tip of the Island and you reach the Sound with its spectacular views of Kitterland, the Calf of Man and the racing tidal currents which separate them. This is one of the Isle of Man’s most treasured places and one of the first to qualify as a National Heritage Area. Jean-jee troailt dys sheear-yiass Ellan Vannin as roshee shiu Cronk Meayl.
