![]() | Manx Museum Accession Number - 1989-0282 |
An officer’s Swallowtail coat of the Royal Manx Fencibles, circa 1797. The facings are of blue, indicating a ‘Royal’ regiment, and the gilt buttons carry the three legs insignia with the words ‘Royal Manx Fencibles’. The Fencible regiments were recruited for defence of the British Isles against invasion, but the Manx Fencibles also played a part in the suppression of the 1798 Ulster uprising. Manx National Heritage holds a significant collection of material relating to the Fencibles, including metal and cloth insignia, uniforms, pay and muster rolls, and their colours.
