Internment Camp currency (WW2)

This half-crown note was issued for use in Onchan civilian internment camp. In 1940 the British government ordered the arrest of all enemy aliens resident in Britain, and numbers of German citizens, among them prominent artists and intellectuals, were rounded up. Many of these people were Jewish refugees from Nazi tyranny, who never the less found themselves transported to the Isle of Man. The internees quickly organised themselves, setting up camp theatres, universities and other activities. Notes such as these could be used in the camp canteen, selling items such as tobacco.
