Miniature of Captain Christian (Manx Fencibles)
![]() | Manx Museum Accession Number - 1954-2649 |
Watercolour miniature of Captain John Christian of the Second Corps of Royal Manx Fencible Infantry, later Third Corps. Fencible regiments were raised during the Napoleonic Wars to replace regular troops who had been sent overseas. The name derives from the word ‘defencible’, as the men were recruited on the understanding that they would be used only for the defence of the British Isles against invasion. The Second Corps was raised by Lord Henry Murray, brother of the Duke of Atholl. The Christians and other prominent local families provided most of the officers.
