Ben my Chree IV Model

Ben my Chree model

Manx Museum Accession Number - 21865

Shipbuilders’ models such as this one of SS Ben my Chree IV were once common sights in the larger railway stations across the north of England. They were eye catching and attractive adverts for the Isle of Man. Ben my Chree IV was built in 1927 by Cammell Laird at Birkenhead, as part of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company’s rebuilding programme following the First World War. Requisitioned for war service in 1940, she took part in the Dunkirk evacuation, before returning to the passenger trade after the war. She was broken up in 1965. The name means ‘girl of my heart’ in Manx.

This model is on display in the Manx Museum, Douglas.
