The TT Phenomenon
The Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy) races began in 1904 as the Gordon Bennett motor car trials. It had proved impossible to obtain an Act of Parliament in the UK to allow roads to be closed for racing, but the then Lieutenant Governor, Lord Raglan was able to obtain such an Act from the Manx Parliament.

In 1907 motorcycle races began, and since then each summer fans flock to the island to watch motorcycles race at speeds of up to 180 miles an hour along twisting Manx roads. The races have witnessed stars such as Mike Hailwood, Carl Fogarty, Steve Hislop and Joey Dunlop in action, but fans come not just for the races but to enjoy the carnival atmosphere and socialise with other like minded people.
