Civil War pewter

Manx Museum Accession Number - 2003-0015/1-12

During the English Civil War James Stanley, Earl of Derby, held the Isle of Man for the King. Following Stanley’s capture and execution in 1648 the English parliament sent a fleet to subdue the island, which anchored in Ramsey bay. This 16th Century pewter porringer, found on Ramsey shore, represents plate which was seized at that time, in preparation for making shot. It may have been taken by members of the Parliamentary forces who expected to meet resistance, or perhaps by the defenders of a nearby fort who were preparing to repel the invaders.

This pewter is on display in the Manx Museum, Douglas.
