Chair from 1979 Tynwald Ceremony

In 1979 Tynwald celebrated its 1000th anniversary. Each old midsummer’s day Tynwald gathers at St Johns at the geographical centre of the island, to hear the reading of new laws passed in the previous year, and to receive grievances. This gathering is perhaps the most obvious aspect of Tynwald’s Viking heritage. The point is underlined by the Viking ship logo on this chair, used at the 1979 event, over which Her Majesty the Queen presided as Lord of Mann.
