1733 Derby penny
![]() | Manx Museum Accession Number - 1975-0068/18 |
One of the rights enjoyed by the Earls of Derby as Kings (later Lords) of Mann was to issue their own coinage. The 1733 coinage is the commonest of several issues, and many forgeries are also known to exist. The obverse of this coin features the eagle and child, part of the arms of the Derby family, whilst the reverse features the Three Legs of Mann. At one time there were thirteen pennies in a Manx shilling. Attempts to reduce this to twelve met with serious riots in Douglas.
