Samplers (more fully ‘examplers’) are widely known throughout the British Isles and indeed Europe, and date back to the middle ages. One of their purposes was teach young women and girls a variety of embroidery and sewing techniques, which for some at least would have practical applications in the repair of garments or even making of items of clothing. Manx National Heritage possesses a fine collection. This example was made by Annie Quayle, a miner’s daughter from Laxey.
