Rechabite Cup

Rechabite Cup

Manx Museum Accession Number - 2003- 0057

The Rechabites were one of the strongest friendly societies in the Isle of Man in the 19th Century. As well as paying benefits to members who were aged or infirm, they had a strong tee-totalist element, and their motto was ‘We shall drink no wine’. The name derives from that of an Old Testament tribe, and much of their terminology was based on the Old Testament, with individual branches called ‘tents’, after the tents in which the nomadic Israelites had lived.

This cup is on display in the Manx Museum, Douglas.
