Net Making Machine

net making machine

Manx Museum Accession Number - 1954-3757

This net making machine was made by the firm of Knox & co and was used around 1900 at Qualtroughs net factory in Castletown. Most net looms were worked by women, by means of foot operated treadles. This machine however is rather unusual in that it has been modified to work via steam power. It represents the many industries on land - and the many families- which the fishing industry indirectly supported.

This machine is on display in the Nautical Museum, Castletown.
