Sunbonnet

In rural communities, working costume remained largely unchanged from the 1700s until the early 1900s. Many women in these communities worked on the land, sometimes running crofts whilst their husbands were away fishing. Typical of the Manxwoman’s dress was the sunbonnet, worn when working in the fields. Made of cotton or linen it was immensely practical, and kept the sun, wind or rain off the wearers face. It was usually worn with a shawl which in very bad weather could be drawn up over the head for added protection.
