‘Mankiller’ hayrake

‘Mankiller’ hayrake

Manx Museum Accession Number - 1954-5198

Many tasks which contributed to the appearance of the countryside depended upon plentiful manual labour. These included repair of stone walls, clearing ditches and clearing gorse and bracken. This enormous hayrake came from a farm at Ballacain, near Ballaugh. Gathering hay with such a rake must have been backbreaking work. Today this type of work would be done by machines. The name ‘Mankiller’ derives from the enormous teeth.

This hayrake is on display in the Manx Museum, Douglas.
