Turf Cutting Spade
![]() | Manx Museum Accession Number - 1954-6868 |
Turf or peat was often used for fuel in crofting communities in the 19th Century and before. The turf was cut after the harvest was finished and in readiness for the approaching winter, using a specially shaped spade. A crofter would leave home at 4am for a day spent cutting turf on the slopes of Snaefell. After he had cut enough for his own purposes, he would often return the following day to assist his neighbours to collect what they needed. The turf was stacked outside the cottage, and dried out ready for use.
This spade is on display in the Manx Museum, Douglas.
