Manx Museum Accession Number - 1978-0234 & 1982-0193

Before the days of banks, people often hid their savings in the ground during times of trouble. Sometimes the owners were never able to return to collect their hoards of money or bullion and they have remained buried until chance discovery in more recent times. The field from which this hoard came is now known as The Silver Field.

The hoard consists of over 200 coins, mostly English sterling silver pennies, dating from between 1279 to 1327 - an era spanning the reigns of two English kings - Edward I and Edward II. It was a particularly unsettled time, with the Anglo-Scottish wars raging in Britain, so it is perhaps unsurprising that the hoard was buried for safe-keeping.

The inscription on the obverse (head) side of the coins shown reads;

EDW RANGL DNH HYB

which is an abbreviation of the Latin words which can be translated as;

EDWARD, KING OF ENGLAND, LORD OF IRELAND.

The hoard is on display at the Manx Museum.
