The Launch of GamCare Isle of Man at Keyll Daree, 15th November FROM 12.30 to 1.30pm

The Isle of Man Alcohol Advisory Service has just launched a new support service for problem gamblers and their family members on the Island. ‘GamCare Isle of Man’ is a partnership venture with GamCare UK, the Department of Social Care and the Island’s Gambling Supervision Commission. Funding has become available for the project through fees levied on licence holders within the Island’s Gaming Industry.

The Director of the IOM Alcohol Advisory Service Thea Ozenturk said:

“We are delighted that the Island now has a dedicated support service for problem gambling and it is a real coup to become an affiliated partner of GamCare, the leading provider of support in the UK, as we will be able to benefit from their expertise and established model of practice in supporting those affected by gambling addiction.”

The service has appointed Lyndsey Smart to the position of Problem Gambling Support Worker. Her primary role will be to provide one to one counselling & support, but also raise awareness about problem gambling in the wider community. The numbers of affected individuals is unknown at present, however, in addition to the new service a population research study has been commissioned to establish the prevalence of gambling and problem gambling on the Isle of Man with amongst others the National Centre for Social Research and will be commencing in early January.

Lyndsey Smart, Problem Gambling Support Worker said:

“Most people have gambled at some time or other in their lives – even if it is only in buying a lottery ticket or a flutter on the Grand National. Gambling can be a harmless, innocent and pleasurable activity for the majority but for a small percentage of the population occasional use can extend into an addiction. Any type of gambling activity can become compulsive, including: betting shops activities-fixed odds terminals, horseracing; slot machines; casinos; online gambling including poker and bingo. The increase in online gambling has meant both men and women have equal opportunities to gamble in a variety of ways which has led to an increase in those developing problems without having to leave their own homes.”

The warning signs which may indicate a gambling problem is emerging include: • Uncontrolled spending • Significant amounts of time spent gambling • Concealing gambling activities • Gambling impacting on relationships with family and friends • Withdrawal from family activities • A lack of interest in previous hobbies and interests • Absence from school, college or work • Mounting debts to family, credit card and loan companies or similar; falling behind on everyday bills and essentials • Gambling to recoup losses from previous gambling episodes.

It is hoped that the new service will foster close links with all potential referrers from the Health, Social Care and Criminal Justice agencies on the Island to raise awareness of the services available and encourage referrals. Also anyone can refer themselves confidentially and will be welcomed in a sensitive and non-judgemental way.

Minister for Social Care Hon Chris Robertshaw MHK said:

“What is important is that we help the minority of people in our community for whom gambling may be a problem. This new on-Island service formed in association with the Gambling Supervision Commission and the Alcohol Advisory Service will help those affected identify ways to receive support directed specifically at getting their gambling back under control, as well as help directed at managing the consequences of problem gambling such as debt, stress and relationship breakdown and the impact on families from gambling.”
