Isle of Man e-gaming sector continues to grow

A survey of leading companies in the Isle of Man estimates that the e-gaming sector grew by 30% in 2008 and is forecast to grow by 40% in 2009. E-gaming now provides over 460 jobs, making it one of the leading recent success stories within the Isle of Man's economy.

The survey was conducted by the Manx e-Gaming Association (MeGA) and the DTI. With regard to staffing, the companies surveyed expect there to be significant growth in IT and finance positions in 2009.

Head of e-gaming development at the DTI, Garth Kimber, said the survey confirmed that e-gaming in the Isle of Man was now a well-developed, highly diverse sector. He added that the eight licences approved in 2008, plus the large number of applications for licences in 2009, were a good indicator of the further growth expected. "Businesses are coming here because the Isle of Man genuinely has much to offer," he said.

MeGA chairman John Webster said that the e-gaming sector was doing well despite the current recession. "It may be that people are opting to enjoy gaming online as an inexpensive substitute to other forms of leisure," he said.

"MeGA is delighted that the Isle of Man has provided a sound base for our businesses to grow and in turn the island has benefited from this success in terms of quality employment opportunities, GDP growth and government revenue. This sector offers tremendous potential for further growth if the island continues to provide a welcoming environment.
