Prison staff to raise funds for Lisa Lowe Appeal

PRISON staff plan to walk the Millennium Way during September, to raise money for the Manx Cancer Help Association.

Best foot forward: Prison officers and staff get readyPhysical education instructors Mike Pacey and Steve Hinds will lead a group of 15-20 colleagues, who are not required for duty that day at the Victoria Road jail, to complete the challenging 28 miles from Sky Hill, near Ramsey, to Castle Rushen in Castletown, in a repeat of a sponsored walk they completed in 1997.

Senior Officer Mike Pacey explained:

‘Ten years ago 10 of us completed the Millennium Way for the Lisa Lowe Appeal and it raised about £1,000 so we hope to double that amount following the walk on September 5.’

The PE instructors manage fitness programmes for prisoners in the prison’s gym. Andrea Chambers, care co-ordinator of the Manx Cancer Help Association, which runs the Lisa Lowe Appeal, watched them training for the sponsored walk in between sessions this week.

She said:

‘We are at present introducing new services and very much appreciate the loyalty of people like the prison PE instructors who are repeating their fund raising efforts.’

Anyone who wishes to sponsor the prison staff can send donations to the Manx Cancer Help Association, the Lisa Lowe Centre, Old School House, Cronkbourne, Braddan, IM4 4QH. For more information about the charity, please email: manxcancerhelp@manx.net.
