17th April 2009 Onshore wind for the Island a step closerThe possibility of onshore wind generation is a step closer today following the publication of a study concerning how such wind generation could be incorporated within the Manx Electricity Authority’s generation and distribution systems. This study illustrates that the systems could accommodate wind generation of up to 20MW (MegaWatts) or 12% of the Island’s current electricity generation needs. This finding complements earlier studies which indicate that the Island benefits from one of the best supplies of wind in the British Isles. The Trade and Industry Minister Hon David Cretney MHK is the Chair of the Energy Policy Working Group of Isle of Man Government. The purpose of this Group is to bring together relevant branches of Government to ensure integrated energy policy development and co-ordinated action. It includes representatives from the Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Local Government and Environment, Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the Manx Electricity Authority. Minister Cretney commented: “The Energy Policy Working Group has been working closely on a range of matters including the potential for wind generation locally. The MEA’s report is a valuable step forward to help us assess the costs, benefits and implications of onshore wind generation. The Group has commissioned further analysis regarding wind and other forms of renewable generation to help us assess the best way forward for the energy policy of the Isle of Man, both for current and future generations.” Onshore wind turbines vary in size and output, varying from 50m to 150m tall delivering up to around 3MW, hence to achieve 20MW output the MEA could accommodate 6 to 12 turbines, which could be placed at one or more locations. Minister Cretney noted: “No final decision has been made on this matter. It will be important we gather all the facts and consult widely before this is possible. Any proposed wind farm will need to secure Planning consent, which will give interested parties an opportunity to express their views. The publication of this report will aid them to do so in an informed manner. That said, the Island must secure its future energy supply and reduce carbon emissions, hence onshore wind generation will be given due consideration as part of our energy policy.” The report can be found at www.gov.im/cso
