New proposal to protect war memorials

The creation of a new Government body to oversee the preservation of the Island’s war memorials is proposed in a consultation report issued by a Council of Ministers working group.

The group, chaired by Chief Minister Tony Brown MHK, is recommending that there be an Isle of Man Government Preservation of War Memorials Committee to keep a register of memorials and encourage their maintenance.

The Chief Minister commented:

‘The Isle of Man has around 500 war memorials of various types and while many are well looked after, some have become neglected. This has highlighted the need for an official body to keep a watch over the care of all memorials. Each war memorial symbolises sacrifices made on behalf of our Island, and none should be forgotten.’

The proposed Committee would have no legal power but would derive status and influence from being appointed by the Council of Ministers. It would work with relevant organisations and individuals to promote the upkeep of memorials.
