Regulations and Guidance - Insurance
General Insurance Intermediaries
In order to ensure the highest standards of conduct within the sector, all independent insurance intermediaries dealing in general (as opposed to life) insurance business are required to register with the Insurance and Pensions Authority and are regulated by the Authority under the provisions of the Insurance Act 2008, and Insurance Intermediaries (General Business) Regulations 1999. Copies of the Act and Regulations can be downloaded via the links at the bottom of this page.
The Insurance Act 2008 replaced the Insurance Intermediaries (General Business) Act 1996 as the primary legislation governing the regulation of general insurance business intermediaries with effect from 1st December 2008. The Insurance Intermediaries (General Business) Regulations 1999, which were made under now-repealed legislative provisions, will continue to have effect following the implementation of the new Act. A further exercise to consolidate these regulations will be carried out in due course. For further information on the application of the 1999 Regulations following the implementation of the 2008 Act, see the Insurance Act 2008 page.
Note - The regulation of intermediaries dealing in life assurance business is carried out by the Financial Supervision Commission, under the Investment Business Act.
