PRESS RELEASE

16th March 1999

Comic Relief Red Nose Day

On Red Nose Day, Friday 12th March 1999, the Department has once again actively supported the fund raising activities of Comic Relief, with staff in a number of areas joining together in a wide variety of activities.

In the Department's headquarters at Markwell House, some staff paid £1 each to dress in uniform or in jeans for the day, and a high degree of ingenuity was displayed by those in costume. In addition to dressing in uniform, a raffle was held amongst the staff of Markwell House, Hillary House and Crookall House, raising over £330 with the prizes generously donated by the Department's Social Club.

In other areas staff in the Physiotherapy Department of Noble's Hospital all wore the Comic Relief T-shirt for the day, raising over £70 in the process. For the Children's Ward, the staff dressed in beach wear and collected around the pubs and clubs of Douglas on Friday night, raising £314.66. In the Maternity Ward and Ward 4, staff raised over £140 by dressing down, and charging staff to do their rounds.

At Ballamona Hospital, staff on the Acute Ward paid £1 each to dress in jeans, with those not in jeans being fined for the privilege. A sum of over £20 was raised from this small unit.

In total, the Department raised over £850 for Comic Relief.

The Minister for the Department, Clare Christian, MLC, commented,

"I am again proud of the efforts of the staff of my Department in raising money for those in need. As always, they have shown themselves to be both resourceful and generous when working to raise money for this worthy cause."

Mr. Ken Tomlinson, The Department's Chief Executive, added,

"The events of this year build on a strong tradition. The staff of the Department are regularly involved with fund raising for charitable causes, and the ingenious ways that they have found to raise money for this year's Comic Relief Red Nose Day deserves the fullest praise."
