Theoretical Driving Tests
Before taking a practical driving test a learner driver must pass the Theory Test.
With ever increasing levels of traffic on the Island's roads it is important that learner drivers have a basic understanding of the "rules of the road" before they pass their practical driving test.
Listed below are a number of books and a CD-Rom which will help prospective learner drivers to prepare for the Theory Test. These books are available from most book shops on the Island.

| Q | Where can I take the Theory Test? |

| A | At the Isle of Man College, Homefield Road, Douglas, held on Monday,
Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings at 9.00am and Monday, Thursday
and Friday afternoons at 4.00pm. Tests will also be arranged from time to
time in Castletown and Ramsey. |
| Q | Is there a separate test for a car and a motorcycle? |
| A | Yes. |
| Q | How many questions are there in the test? |
| A | There are 35 questions, you should try and answer them all. For each question a number of answers will be given and you have to choose the correct answer. |
| Q | How many questions do I have to get right? |
| A | If you get 30 or more questions correct you will pass the test. |
| Q | How long do I have to complete the test? |
| A | The test lasts for a maximum of 40 minutes. The invigilator will tell you when there is 5 minutes left before the end of the test. |
| Q | Will I know the result straight away? |
| A | Yes if computerised. No if paper test, but you will be informed by post within
10 days of your test. |
| Q | If I don't pass, when can I retake the test again? |
| A | Once you’ve received your result, you will have to wait 7 days before you can re-sit the test. |
| Q | How many subjects are there in the examination paper? |
| A | There are 14 subject covering a wide range of subjects from “signs” to “Road Procedure”. Lists of all the questions can be found in the book, “The Official Theory Test for Car Drivers and Motorcyclists “. |
| Q | What do I do if I pass? |
| A | You must keep your pass certificate and take it with your when you sit your practical driving test, as the examiner will want to see it and you must quote the serial number of the certificate on the application form when booking a practical driving test. |
