Using Greenways

Users of motor cycles and other motor vehicles on Greenways are reminded that it is necessary to drive with great care and at slow speed because pedestrians, horses or farm animals may be in the road at any time. Also, the surface of the road may be soft or rough and uncompacted and may have been rutted by vehicles or by flows of water draining from adjacent land. Where the road is of such a character horse riders and motor cyclists need to proceed with particular caution and the road is likely to be impassable to four-wheel road vehicles.

Such roads of carriageway width may often bear the sign "Unsuitable for Motors" if the entrance to the greenway from a motor road is not gated. Many greenways have one or more gates across them, which may be opened to allow pedestrians, vehicles or horses to pass. A gate must be closed afterwards to prevent sheep or other farm animals wandering along the road from the area where they are grazing.

A Greenway Road which is designated in the Order, and to which the weight restriction applies, is identified by the green traffic sign "GREENWAY ROAD - BAYR GLASS" erected at or near the start of the length of the road to which the weight restriction applies. The sign indicates the weight limit of 500kg unladen.

On many Greenways in general a white "speed limit" notice advises motorcyclists not to exceed 20mph. That "speed limit" notice is erected at the start of those Greenways which are of a character that a speed significantly greater than walking pace may be ordinarily achieved by a motor cycle. On designated Greenway Roads the "speed limit" notice may be in addition to the green traffic sign which marks a designated Greenway Road and indicates the 500kg weight limit. Many Greenways which may be considered useful as ways for motor cyclists and horse riders are indicated by a green "finger post" sign depicting a motor cycle and a horse rider.

On the designated Greenway Roads exemptions from the weight limit of 500kg unladen include vehicles being used in connection with agriculture, forestry or horticulture, carts drawn by draught animals, and vehicles which have been issued with a "greenways permit" by the Department of Transport.

Vehicles exceeding 500kg unladen weight which are not otherwise authorised to use a Greenway Road may be issued with a greenways permit if there is a need for the vehicle to use the road. There must be stated on the permit the times (if appropriate), date(s) and purpose for which a vehicle is permitted to use a specified greenway. To apply for a permit contact Network Operations, Highways Division, Department of Transport, Sea Terminal Building, Douglas, Isle of Man IM1 2RF, or use the Contact icon at the top of the page.
