Greenway Paths and Bridle-paths

It has been suggested that several greenways should be designated by a Traffic Regulation Order as "Greenway Paths" on which motor vehicles, irrespective of weight, would be generally prohibited, and would have the effect of confining their use to correspond to that of bridle-paths. (An amendment in 2001 to the Highways Act 1986 enables highways now to be dedicated as "bridle-paths", corresponding to the "bridleways" in England).

At the present time (December 2002) there is just one road, that could be described as a "greenway", on which vehicles are generally prohibited, irrespective of weight. This is that section of the Governor Loch's Road above Injebreck in Braddan that is situated on the side of Colden mountain and was never completed for horse or vehicular traffic. The general prohibition on use of vehicles on that road predates the designation of Greenway Roads in 1994. The boggy character of the road is such that it may also be regarded as generally unsuitable for use by horse riders.
