What We Do

The Highways Operations Section has the responsibility for maintaining the Island's highway network and controlling works on the roads. A team of Highways Inspectors looks after the general maintenance of roads and defects are dealt with on a priority rating system.

The Department maintains a winter gritting programme. See leaflet below.

Obstructions to a Road, Lane or Footway

It is illegal to obstruct the highway or footway. If you are going to undertake any activity that obstructs a road, lane or footway you must get permission to do so before the work is started.

Applications for permission to open a road ( link file 02A) must be submitted at least 21 days before work begins. Enquiries can be made by contacting 01624 686665. Application forms are available at the Department of Transport, Sea Terminal Buildings, Douglas, Isle of Man. IM1 2RF.

If you are erecting scaffolding or placing a skip on a road, lane or footway you need permission to do so. Further information is available here:-
