Road Closures

In order to close a road, either temporarily or permanently a Road Traffic Order must be prepared, and advertised prior to the road being closed.

Road Traffic Orders may be made under Section 3 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1985 or Section 38 of the Highways Act 1986 depending on the type of Order required.

Temporary Road, Lane or Footway Closures, Suspension of Parking or Temporary One Way Traffic Systems may be authorised for statutory undertakers or private companies whilst work is carried out on or under a highway.

Temporary road closures may also be made for sporting or leisure activities.

Application Forms and standard terms and conditions are available by contacting Highways Administration. For details of how to contact them, click on the Contact icon at the top of the page.

A minimum of 21 days notice must be allowed from receipt of the Application.

All Temporary road closures are advertised in the local press and 7 clear days must occur between the date of the advertisement and the road being closed.

A Plan showing the area and extent of the road closure must accompany the Application.

Temporary Road closures may be permitted for a maximum of 6 months.

If an extension is required, an application must be submitted at least 21days prior to the end of the existing order by submission of a new application form.
