Road Safety

Is Your Bike OK?

Before you can take your bike on the road, and before you can take your bike on a Cycling Proficiency Course, you need to make sure that it is in roadworthy condition. This means that your bike should have fully working brakes, front and rear, and your tyres have plenty of tread and be inflated properly.

You will also need a bell or horn on your bike; this is law on the Isle of Man, as is having a red rear reflector to help you to be seen.

If you want to take your bike out at night or in dull weather you will need to have lights at the front and rear. They will not be required on the Cycling Proficiency course as it will be held in daylight.

Is your bike the right size?

You need to make sure that your bike is the correct size for you as bikes that are too big or too small can be difficult to handle and will be dangerous on the road. Make sure you feet can touch the ground when you are sat on the saddle. Legs should be straight and slightly off the ground.
