INFECTIOUS DISEASE - GUIDANCE
Guidance on infection control in nurseries, schools, workplaces and day centres
The Management of Communicable Diseases in Schools, Nurseries, Workplaces and Day Centres policy which we produced in 2007 has now been superseded by a new poster and an easy read guidance booklet which can be downloaded below.
The directorate hope to produce an updated Policy during 2013.
The information provides employers, teachers, carers, and parents of children with the necessary guidance to know how long an infected individual should be excluded from their workplace, school or nursery when they have an infectious disease.
The information is evidence-based and conforms to advice given by the Health Protection Agency (HPA), Health Protection Scotland and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, USA (CDC).
If you think you may have an infectious disease we recommend that you contact your GP or Practice Nurse for advice. For a list of the current Isle of Man Infectious Diseases listed as part of Schedule 2 of the Public Health Act 1990 view our Notifications page.
ExclusionIt is important to appreciate the rationale for exclusion. Exclusion is only used to prevent the infected individual - 'the case' - spreading the infection to others. In view of this, exclusion is only for:
- the period during which the case is infectious to others
- conditions which are easily transmissible
- conditions which have serious consequences for the health of others
Exclusion for communicable diseases should not be used in a punitive way or to allay anxieties of parents of other children. In case of doubt, advice should be sought from the Health Protection Nurses on 642615 or 642657.
Special Circumstances
In these circumstances we recommend you seek advice from our Health Protection Nurses who can be contacted on 642615 or 642657.
