Bowel Cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in both men and women, and is the second biggest cause of cancer deaths with 1 in 10 cancer deaths attributed to bowel cancer.

Between 2006 and 2010, 741 patients were admitted to Noble’s Hospital with suspected bowel cancer on the Isle of Man. Of this total, 179 patients were diagnosed during 2010. Not all bowel cancers are detected early, some are diagnosed too late.

There is overwhelming evidence that a screening programme leads to early detection of bowel cancer and increased survival rates, with the potential result of four to five lives being saved each year in the Isle of Man.

  • If you are aged 60-69 and registered with a GP Practice, you will automatically be offered free screening every two years that can detect the early signs of bowel cancer.
  • If under 60 contact your GP or practice nurse for further advice.
  • If you are 70 or over, you can request a screening kit by calling 0800 707 6060.
