MUSCULOSKELETAL PHYSIOTHERAPY - HOW TO ACCESS PHYSIOTHERAPY

Self Referral

What patients do we see?

We see patients with musculoskeletal problems

Where will I receive treatment?

We provide treatment in the following departments -

  • Central Community Health Centre
  • Ramsey District Cottage Hospital
  • Southern Physiotherapy Unit

What to expect from Physiotherapy?

Your first visit will take around 30-60 minutes depending on what your problem is. You will be asked a number of questions in order to help us ascertain what the problem is and you will also be asked about your general health, any medication you are taking (you may find it easier to bring a list) and your social circumstances / sporting activities as relevant to the problem.

With your consent you will than have a physical examination which involves certain movements and tests of your affected joints, muscles and other tissues which again enables the physiotherapist to diagnose your problem.

We will then produce a jointly agreed set of goals and an individual treatment plan in order to help resolve your problem. Before attending your appointment it is helpful to think about what your own goals and aims of treatment are.

You will then be followed up as required in department. Follow-up appointments last up to 30 minutes.

What do we offer?

MSK physiotherapists are experts in movement and mobility and deal with problems of stiffness, weakness, posture and gait. Therapy is aimed at restoring, maintaining and improving peoples’ function and movement and thereby maximising the quality of their lives.

Treatment is variable and dependent on what the problem is and your Physiotherapist will discuss treatment options with you. The basis of the majority of treatment packages is exercise and each patient will receive instruction on relevant exercise and activity that they can undertake themselves to assist with recovery and longer term management of their condition. (We also provide hands-on treatment if it is required and appropriate to your problem and this may include joint mobilisations, taping, soft tissue work or electrotherapy (eg ultrasound) amongst other things)

What should I wear?

Please wear or bring appropriate clothing such as shorts or a vest-top so that your problem can be properly assessed by your Physiotherapist.
