The Clinical Leadership Programme is about advancing excellence in clinical leadership. It has been running in the Isle of Man since 2001.
10th October 2012 saw the start of the 9th cohort of clinical leaders commencing the Clinical Leadership Programme. The clinical leaders who join the programme are from a number of different areas including Noble’s Hospital, Community, Mental Health and the independent sector.
The programme is not just for nurses but also allied health professionals. The philosophy behind the programme is that by developing the skills of clinical leaders, patient care can be influenced for the better. The programme aims to get the clinical leaders to put the patient at the centre of all they do.
The 12 month programme is practice based, which is divided into four modules. Each module comprises workshops, action learning sets, work based activity, e-learning and one-to-one coaching.
The modules are:
- Culture and Context;
- Developing your self as a leader;
- Quality and Safety Working in Teams.
For the latest programme the toolkit as been updated and adapted to current health and social care context but the core concerns of the Clinical Leadership programme remain as true today as when they were first researched. Those concerns suggested that through focusing on developing leadership capabilities in five key areas, patient care would be improved. These areas are: managing self; focusing on the needs of the service user; developing and maintaining effective relationships; internal and external networking and political astuteness.
Participants on the programme learn about the inter-relationships between the organisation, themselves and the team in a local and national policy context. The participants are enabled to recognise and understand the influence that these inter relationships have on safe, quality care.
The programme uses advanced learning techniques in an innovative way to produce practical results. Patient stories and observations of care are effective tools in identifying what patient’s value and where their experiences and the care environment can be improved. Participants work with their teams to develop action plans to address these issues. They also develop networking skills and political awareness to enable them to influence policy at all levels.
