With the aim of increasing sports participation in schools the Sports Development Unit has once again put together an island wide Primary Schools Sports Programme to run between September 2012 and July 2013.
Primary school programme
The programme consists of 7 different sports that take place throughout the school year aimed at different age groups within Primary Schools. For each of the 7 sports the initiative begins with a training workshop for primary school teachers, parent helpers & young leaders to provide them with some basic fundamental knowledge of the sport, the rules and fun drills & games that can be used for skill development. Following this training course each school is asked to set up an after school club for a minimum of 6 weeks. The initiative then culminates with the schools coming together to play an Inter-School Festival.
For some of the sports included in the programme there will be regional Festivals in the North, South, West and East of the island followed by a National Final whereby the top two teams from each of the regional events come together to play one another. Furthermore for certain sports such as Rugby, the winners of the National Final will then travel off-island to compete in the UK. In addition to the regional and the national festivals, this year the Sports Development Team will be introducing a number of Fun Festivals whereby the teams finishing in the lower positions in the regional events are invited to come together and play one another in a fun event at the National Sports Centre.
The sports included in the 2012/2013 programme are as follows:
- Tag Rugby (Year 5 & 6’s)
- Badminton (Year 5 & 6’s)
- Hockey (Year 3 & 4’s)
- Netball (Year 5 & 6’s)
- Athletics (Year 4, 5 & 6’s)
- Kwik Cricket (Year 3 & 4’s)

The Sure Sports Leader Programme is an initiative set up in the Secondary Schools by the Sports Development Team to encourage students in year 11, 12 & 13 to take on a sports leadership role to help support the local primary schools with the after school clubs running in line with the Sure Sports Primary School Programme.
Each student on the Sure Sports Leaders Programme must attend a number of workshops at the beginning of the school year to widen their knowledge and understanding of sports coaching. These courses include:
- Leadership Workshop
- Safeguarding & Protecting Children Awareness Course
- Minimum of 2 Sport Specific Courses in:
- Tag Rugby
Once satisfied that the students are competent in assisting a junior coaching session, the Sports Development Team then provide the young leaders with a T-shirt and log book and set them up with a placement in a nearby primary school to assist with coaching an after school club.
The young leaders are also encouraged to log hours in their log books for coaching at community club sessions, secondary school clubs (for younger year groups) and Manx Youth Games sessions.
The generous sponsorship from Sure has enabled the Sports Development Unit to offer prizes for the students accumulating the most number coaching hours per term.
