Manx Sport and Recreations Sport Development Unit are committed to supporting education and schools delivery of sport. The Sport Development Units main tool to achieve this, and to increase sports participation is the Primary Schools Sports Programme.
Primary Schools Sports Programme
With the aim of increasing sports participation in schools the Sports Development Unit have put together an island wide Primary Schools Sports Programme. This consists of 7 different sports that take place throughout the school year aimed at different age groups within Primary Schools. For each of the 7 sports the initiative begins with a Training Course for Primary School teachers and parent helpers to provide them with some basic fundamental knowledge of the sport, the rules and fun drills & games that can be used for skill development. Following this training course each school is asked to set up an After School Club for a minimum of 6 - 8 weeks. The initiative then culminates with the schools coming together to play an Inter School Festival. For some of the sports included in the programme there will be regional Festivals followed by a National Final (where the top two teams come together to play one another). Furthermore for certain sports such as Rugby, the winners of the National Final will then travel off Island to compete in the UK.
Coach Education
The Sport Development Unit offer access to National Governing Bodies Level 1 + 2 coaching courses and Sports Coach UK workshops, i.e. Safeguarding and Protecting Children and Equity in Your Coaching. Both Primary and Secondary school staff have benefited from recently attending coaching courses run by the Unit. Please follow the link to Manx Sport and Recreation, Sport Development website, as well as detailing further training opportunities for teachers the site also illustrates sport and exercise opportunities that are available for young people aged from Year Reception to Year 10.
